2007 Handy and Thompson Reunion
On Saturday, April 21, 2007, the College of Business hosted a reunion in honor of Dr. Charles Handy and Dr. William Thompson, two of the earliest leaders of the business program at Iowa State.
Handy began in the Department of Industrial Administration in 1958 as an accounting instructor. By 1975 he was promoted to professor, and served for the next three years as the first director of the new Industrial Administrative Sciences graduate program. He became chair of the Department of Industrial Administration in 1978.
He oversaw times of unprecedented growth of Iowa State’s business programs, and led the department as it became a school in 1980 and ultimately a college in 1984. He was appointed dean of the college at that time, and served in that role for five more years before becoming professor emeritus of accounting through 1992.
Handy and his wife Mary Kay currently split their time between Naples, Florida and Independence, Iowa. He is still very active in the College of Business, writing the closing column in each issue of Prospectus.
Thompson first came to Iowa State as a graduate assistant in 1942. He became an instructor in 1944, and eventually served as chair of the Department of Industrial Administration from 1968 to 1975. He closed his career at Iowa State as professor emeritus of transportation and logistics from 1975 through his retirement in 1980.
At age 97, Thompson currently resides in Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames and remains very active. He is an avid Cyclone athletics fan and travels frequently, having recently returned from a month in Florida.
Although both men earned their bachelors and masters degrees elsewhere, they both completed their doctoral degrees at Iowa State – Handy in economics in 1970 and Thompson in industrial administration in 1948.
On Saturday, April 22, 2006, the College of Business welcomed back alumni to celebrate and honor the lives and careers of William "Wild Bill" Schrampfer and Harry Shadle, two faculty members who were influential in laying the foundation for Iowa State's business program.
