Academic History
B.S. Industrial Engineering, Iowa State University - 1959
MBA Stanford University - 1965

Professional Activities
Bill engaged first in engineering capacities and subsequently in line management, in the brick, tile, sewer pipe, industrial abrasives, and concrete products industries, becoming product line vice president of the Can-Tex Industries Division (now the Construction Materials Division) of Harsco Corporation, a Fortune 500 corporation.  In mid-career he left the corporate arena to return to small business and began acquiring companies engaged in the manufacture of concrete products.  He also developed interests in a number of other business ventures, from private aviation to equipment leasing to cable television to land development and farm management.

In the 1990s he sold his manufacturing companies and established Cerro Gordo Land Company to develop real estate in the Mason City area.  He has also had a longtime involvement in farm management as President of Beaver Farms, Inc., and the Goodwin Grain and Land Company.

Community Activities
Bill has held a number of board memberships in business, industry and non-profits, including USBank of Des Moines; the Red Wing Sewer Pipe Corporation; Iowa Aviation, Inc.; Central Retirement Community; the Iowa Health Foundation; the Human Gene Therapy Research Institute; the J.A. Cheley Foundation; and the Polk County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.  He holds or has held professional memberships in the National Concrete Masonry Association; the Iowa Association of Business and Industry; the Farm Bureau Federation; the Iowa Engineering Society; the Brick Institute of America; the National Clay Pipe Institute; the Naval Reserve Association; and the Reserve Officers Association of America.  He retired from the Naval Reserve in 1982 with the rank of captain, having served while on active duty as a capsule recovery officer in the NASA Mercury Space Program.  In addition to his business activities he has also been a sports official for over thirty years, including long-time service as Registrar and Field Coordinator of the Drake Relays in Des Moines, and as a member and past chairman of its Executive Committee.

Iowa State University
Bill has been active in the alumni affairs of Iowa State since graduation.  He is a life member of the Alumni Association, and in 1981 was appointed a Life Governor of the ISU Foundation, and has served on its Finance Committee since 1991.  Because of his association with the Stanford Business School, he took an interest in the College of Business at ISU, assisting founding Dean Charles Handy in developing a financial base of support for the college.  He became a member of the Dean's Advisory Council in 1991 and has served continuously since that time as an advisor to Deans David Shrock, Benjamin Allen, and Labh Hira.

Awards
The College of Business awarded Bill with the DeVries Award for service in 1997.
