Sympathy........to Rick Carter and his family upon the death of his brother Robert C. Carter from Leesburg, FL.  Our condolences to you.

 

Congratulations…….At the Collegiate Panhellenic Council Interfraternity Council ceremony on October 21, 34 ISU faculty were recognized as outstanding faculty.  Please join me in congratulating these fellow eight of our college colleagues who received this honor:  Sana Akili, lecturer of marketing; Dermot Hayes, professor of finance; David Hunger, professor of management; Jeffrey Kaufmann, assistant professor of management; Gary Koppenhaver, associate professor of finance; Ellen Mullen, lecturer of management; John Wong, associate professor of marketing; and Max Wortman, distinguished professor of management. 
 

CAREER SERVICES
Business Career Services and Graduate Career Services to Host Pharmaceutical Panel
Business Career Services and Graduate Career Services will be hosting “So You Want to be in Pharmaceuticals?”  This event will feature a panel of pharmaceutical representatives and will be held on Tuesday, November 9 at 7 p.m. in Richard and Joan Stark Lecture Hall, 1148 Gerdin Business Building.  Students who are interested in working for a pharmaceutical company will be able to participate in the panel discussion to help guide them on their career paths.

Career Coordinator Attends Diversity Conference
Kevin J. Hardy, career coordinator, in Business Career Services, attended the Iowa Council for International Understanding’s Conference on Diversity: Beginners, Experts, and everyone in between.  The conference took place on October 21 in Des Moines.

Career Coordinators to Attend Recruiting Conference
Kathy Wieland, Business Career Services director and Kevin J. Hardy, career coordinator, will be attending the Midwest Association of Colleges & Employers (MWACE) Recruiting Trends Conference in Chicago, IL. on November 18 and 19.  The Michigan State Employment Outlook survey will be released at this meeting.

FINANCE
Gary Koppenhaver, associate professor of finance, and Travis Sapp, assistant professor of finance, had their paper "Money Funds or Markets? Valuing Intermediary Services" accepted for publication in the Journal of Financial Services Research.

 

MANAGEMENT
David Hunger, professor of management, presided as President at the annual meeting of the North American Case Research Association (NACRA) in Sedona, Arizona October 6-9, 2004. The meeting was a success with a total of around 120 cases and papers being presented.

 

PAPPAJOHN CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP
An Entrepreneur Forum is scheduled for Thursday, November 10, 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Pioneer Room, Memorial Union.  Speaking will be Peg Armstrong-Gustafson, the owner and founder of Amson Technology.  Peg is a former senior executive at Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc. with extensive experience in marketing, technology, strategic planning and financial management. Armstrong-Gustafson and her husband, Gregg Gustafson, founded Amson Technology in 2000. Its businesses include commercial real estate management, technology investment, distribution of non-chemical pest control devices, and technology and business consulting.

 

PRODUCTION OPERATION MANAGEMENT

Rhonda Lummus, associate professor of production operation management, was an invited speaker at the APICS International Conference October 10-13, 2004, in San Diego, CA.  Her topic was "Getting Vocal with Your Supply Chain Partners to Synchronize Supply with Demand." She made the same presentation to the Central Iowa APICS Chapter at their October 20 dinner meeting in Des Moines.
 
At the APICS conference Rhonda Lummus, associate professor of production operation management, attended a Board of Directors meeting for the APICS Education & Research Foundation Board of Directors.  The foundation is the research arm of APICS.  At the meeting Rhonda was elected to a one year term as President of the Board.
 
Rhonda Lummus, associate professor of production operation management, submitted "Supply Chain Options for Biobased Businesses" a 65 page report to complete a grant from the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. 

 

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER
On September 30 and October 1, associate state director Lars Peterson attended the PDI Fall Conference in Des Moines, networking with other economic developers from across the state of Iowa.

On October 20, state director Jon Ryan and associate state director Lars Peterson attended the Community Entrepreneurship Academy in Fairfield, IA, where several state economic development professionals and other Iowa business leaders discussed the assistance and opportunities available for entrepreneurs in Iowa.  U.S. Senator Tom Harkin gave a speech on “The Entrepreneurship Challenge in Rural Iowa.”

TRANSPORTATION AND LOGISTICS
Clyde Kenneth Walter, professor of transportation and logistics, and Richard F. Poist,chair, Department of Logistics, Operations, and Management Information Systems, had an article titled "North American Inland Port Development: International vs. Domestic Shipper Preferences," accepted for publication in International Journal of Physical Distribution and Logistics Management, Vol. 34, No. 7, 2004, pp. 579-597.

 

Yoshinori Suzuki's, associate professor of transportation and logistics, paper "The Net Benefit of Airline Overbooking" Transportation Research Part E was accepted for publication in Logistics and Transportation Review, forthcoming.

 

Yoshinori Suzuki, associate professor of transportation and logistics, would like to thank the dean's office for providing the mini-scholarship grant for this research, which was used to purchase a simulation software.

A press release was distributed “Business Ethics post-Enron topic of October 27 ISU Presidential Lecture” included information about Brad Shrader, professor of management, who was recognized as the fall 2004 Presidential University Lecturer. 

A feature story was ran on Susan North (’84 Management) about her 30 years of experience with the Ames Public Library.

A story was ran in the Des Moines Register about Lt. Col. Matt Swanson (’83 Marketing) and his visit back to campus to discuss his experiences during September 11, 2001.  Lt. Col. Swanson received the Air Force Commendation Medal in honor of his role in devising an evacuation plan.
