DEAN

Sympathy to Brian Campbell, Rick Carter, Diane Janvrin, and Ellen Nystrom:  Brian's brother-in-law Samuel Hill from Gloucester, VA; Rick's father-in-law John Hembury originally from Auburn, NY, Diane's 11-year old son Brice; and Ellen's dad former State Senator Jack Nystrom from Boone.   Our deepest sympathy to you and your families.

Congratulations to Cynthia Campbell, associate professor of finance, G. Premkumar, professor of management information systems, David Smith, professor of accounting, and Roger Stover, professor of finance, who were awarded by the Board of Regents a Faculty Professional Development Assignment. 

 

CAREER SERVICES
Career Services Hires New Career Coordinator
Melissa Sly
has been hired for the Career Coordinator position and will work with marketing and management students.  She has worked for Norwest in both human resources and marketing and has started and managed two small businesses.  Melissa has both her undergraduate degree and MBA from Iowa State University.  Welcome to the team Melissa! 

International Internship Grant Awarded
Business Career Services has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Council for International Programs to help fund international internships.  Only 15 out of the 59 applicants received grants.  The College of Business has agreed to match the grant, therefore providing a total of $10,000 to assist students with travel and living costs while abroad.  Five students will receive a $2,000 scholarship in April 2005. 

Business Career Services would like to thank the members of the selection committee for helping to make this grant possible:  Howard Van Auken, professor of management; Ann Coppernoll Farni, director of undergraduate services; Labh Hira, dean; Kay Palan, interim associate dean, undergraduate programs; and students Chad Gasta, Andrea Rheinhart and Jennifer Baragary Applications for the scholarship will be available in early spring. 

Career Services to Host Career Week
Career Services will host the first annual Career Week from February 17-24, 2005.  The week will include mock interviews, resume building workshops, interviewing workshops, and presentations relating to specific job fields.  The week will conclude with the Business/LAS Spring Career Day on Wednesday, February 23 and interview day on Thursday, February 24. 

Cargill Funds Business Career Services Diversity Involvement Initiative
Cargill has agreed to fund the Business Career Services and Graduate Career Services Diversity Involvement Initiative for $6,500.  This money will be used to fund special diversity programming in both the Business Career Services and Graduate Career Services offices.

FINANCE
Roger Stover, professor of finance, co-authored a paper entitled "The Role of Banks in Takeovers," that was presented at the Australasian Finance and Banking Conference in Sydney, Australia.
 

MANAGEMENT
David Hunger, professor of management, had his book titled "Essentials of Strategic Management", (co-authored with Tom Wheelen of the University of South Florida) translated into Chinese and Greek editions.
 

MARKETING

Sridhar Ramaswami, professor of marketing, was invited to make a presentation to brand managers at the CMO (Chief Marketing Officer) Conference at Atlanta, GA on December 1, 2004.  The conference was jointly organized by the Zyman Institute of Brand Science, Emory University and Capre Consulting Group.  The topic of his presentation was "Impact of Marketing Competencies on Brand Equity and Firm Value."
 

PAPPAJOHN CENTER FOR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Pappajohn New Venture Business Plan Competition Winners Announced
Three Iowa State University student teams competed against 10 other student teams from around the state in the 2004 Pappajohn New Venture Business Plan Competition held in Des Moines, IA at the Pappajohn Higher Education Building on December 10.  Two of Iowa State's teams received top honors and a $5,000 cash award.  Winners included:  Matt Ostanik (MBA) for his business plan "Electronic Exchange"; Melanie Davis (CompSci), Doug Houghton (CompSci) and Shahzaib Younis (CompSci) for their business plan "Proximity Innovations."  Michael Albertsen (Dietitics) was also a finalist in the competition for his business plan "Clari-Tea."

Collegiate Entrepreneurs Iowa Conference (February 25, 2005)
The Collegiate Entrepreneurs Iowa Conference, an annual student/faculty conference initiated by Iowa State students in 2002, will be held this year at NIACC in Mason City, IA.  Students, faculty, and industry leaders are encouraged to attend.  Speakers include:  John Pappajohn, President, Equity Dynamics; Melinda Nelson Masson, President & CEO, The Merit Companies; Mike Marolt, President, eq-life, a Best Buy entity; and the Lewerke Brothers of Woodharbor Doors & Cabinetry, Inc.  Several student entrepreneurs from Iowa colleges and universities will also be speaking during workshops and panels.  The conference is planned for Friday, February 25, 2005, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm.  Registration available at

John & Mary Pappajohn Scholarships
The Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship is now accepting applications for the 2005 John & Mary Pappajohn Scholarship program.  Ten $1,000 scholarships will be awarded this spring to students demonstrating a clear interest in entrepreneurship or in owning their own business.  Visit the Pappajohn Center website for details and application information:

PRODUCTION OPERATION MANAGEMENT

Rhonda Lummus, associate professor of production operation management, taught a three-day executive development seminar on "Integrated Operations Management" in Munich, Germany on Dec.1-3, 2004.  The attendees were 15 plant manager-level employees from Germany, Poland, The Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland.  They represented companies such as BASF, Tenneco, Philips Electronics, H.B. Fuller, etc.

Rhonda Lummus, associate professor of production operation management, gave a dinner meeting presentation on "New Developments in Supply Chain Management" to 25 logistics and operations managers and students at the Nijmegen Business School, Nijmegen, The Netherlands on Dec. 9, 2004.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Please welcome two new graduate assistants who will be working in the Undergraduate Programs office:  Hillary Hendrickson, a second year MBA student, will be taking over the advisees of Terrance Campbell.  Hillary is from Jewell, Iowa, and has an undergraduate degree in psychology from Iowa State University.  Melissa Pederson, a first year graduate student in Higher Education and a graduate of the University of Utah, is joining the office as an academic advisor.  Melissa is taking over the advising position of David Stock who graduated this fall from the College's MBA program.

Media Hits for College of Business for December 2004
MONDAY, DECEMBER 27
Tony Hendrickson
, associate dean and associate professor of management information systems, was quoted extensively in David Elbert’s Des Moines Register column about Hendrickson’s MBA course, which features area executives sharing which movies inspire them as leaders. The column came as a result of a press release.

MONDAY, DECEMBER 20
The Des Moines Business Record ran a short story featuring the three $5,000 seed capital grant winners from the entrepreneurial competition sponsored by John Pappajohn and the state’s five Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers. Two of the three grants went to Iowa State entries, including one from MBA student Matt Ostanik.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 15
The Des Moines Register quoted Kay Palan, interim associate dean and associate professor of marketing, in a story about Blockbuster Inc. eliminating late fees on rental movies and games.  

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 14
Gary Koppenhaver
, associate professor of finance, was quoted in a Des Moines Register story about the Krause Challenge, a student investment competition set up by grants from Krause Gentle Corp. 

MONDAY, DECEMBER 13
Kathy Wieland
, director of business career services, was quoted in an Iowa State Daily story about improving job outlooks for December graduates. Bryan Muilenburg, a December graduate in marketing and transportation logistics, was also quoted and featured as the lead of the story. 

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 11
The Tribune
ran a story about the three business ideas presented by ISU students at an entrepreneurial competition sponsored by John Pappajohn and the state’s five Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers. Three of the 13 regional winners chosen to present at the competition were from Iowa State, two of which won two of the three $5,000 grants. One winner was MBA student Matt Ostanik, who was quoted in the story. 

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 10
Inside Iowa State
featured Cynthia Jeffrey, associate professor of accounting, as one of nine experts on what to expect in 2005. 

Inside Iowa State cited Sanjeev Agarwal, Faculty Senate president and professor of marketing, as having cast the tie-breaking vote to approve a proposal to combine the colleges of Education and Family and Consumer Sciences.

The College of Business received mention in Inside Iowa State for its commencement ceremonies on Friday, December 17th

James D. Nalley (Accounting ’92) was featured in the “Do You Know” section of the Des Moines Register. 

MONDAY, DECEMBER 6
The Tribune
ran an “In Brief” item about Wells Fargo’s $500,000 donation to the College of Business to establish the Wells Fargo Professorship in Finance. 

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 4
Lori Wirth
, secretary to the director of marketing & alumni relations, was pictured in a story from The Tribune about the Travelin’ Boots line-dancing club.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2
Iowa State University received mention in an Iowa City Press Citizen story as the location of one of five Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers in Iowa. The story was about John and Mary Pappajohn’s $4 million donation to promote entrepreneurship in Iowa. 

The College of Business received mention on the ISU faculty and staff announcements page, for presenting an overview of the business minor at the Advisers Exchange meeting on December 3rd

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 29
The Des Moines Business Record ran an item about a conference called “Solutions for Managing Business Risk,” a statewide conference for rural businesses, to be held at the Gerdin Business Building on December 4th.
