DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & ALUMNI RELATIONS

The hit TV series The Apprentice is conducting a casting call for Iowa Staters, right here in the Gerdin Business Building. The event will take place on Thursday, July 14, 2005 from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. This casting call is for members of the Iowa State community only - students, alums, and faculty/staff. Non-Iowa Staters can attend the open casting call on Saturday, July 16 at 9 a.m. at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.  The process is simple - fill out an application in advance, then show up and meet with the casting directors. Career Coordinators Attend Conferences

Melissa Sly, career coordinator, attended Career Leader-College Training in Chicago, IL on June 28-30, 2005.  “Career Leader-College” is an assessment tool used to help Business majors choose a major within the business disciplines based upon their interests, values and perceived abilities.
 

Kevin J. Hardy, experiential learning coordinator, will attend the NACE Management Leadership Institute on July 10-15, 2005 in Cincinnati, Oh.

Career Coordinators Visit Top Ten Employers in July
Kevin J. Hardy, experiential learning coordinator, Melissa Sly, career coordinator, and Kathy Wieland, director of business career services, will be visiting the top ten employers for 2003-2004 July 11th - 26th.

Upcoming Career Fair
Mark your calendars for the Business/LAS Fall Career Fair to be held Wednesday, September 21, 2005
followed by Interview Day on the 22nd. Mock Interview Day, where students can get interviewing practice with a recruiter, will be held on Thursday, September 15. Students must sign-up in advance on ISU CMS, our online recruiting software, for this chance to practice interviewing with actual employers.  We hope that you will keep these important events in mind as you plan your syllabi and fall calendars.  Contact Business Career Services at buscs@iastate.edu or 4-2542.

GRADUATE PROGRAMS
Mark Peterson, director of graduate career services, represented Graduate Business Career Services at the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) annual conference held in Milwaukee, WI in May.

Mark Peterson, director of graduate career services, was an invited panelist for a presentation titled “Enhancing Employer Relations” at the MBA Career Services Council (MBACSC) annual conference in Philadelphia, PA June 13-16, 2005.  Peterson’s co-panelists were Kevin Baltz - University of Chicago GSB, John Hamilton – Owen School of Business at Vanderbilt University, and Tracy Handler – Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College (CUNY).

Mark Peterson, director of graduate career services, has been named to the planning committee for the 2005 International Career Professionals Conference to be held in Orlando, FL in November.  This annual conference is sponsored by MBACSC, and will be held in tandem with the 11th annual Global MBA/Masters Employment Conference.  The planning committee consists of MBA Career Services Directors from Iowa State University, Cornell University, George Washington University, and University at Buffalo (SUNY).  Iowa State has sent foreign-national MBA and MS students to the Global Employment Conference for the past 7 years.

Mark Peterson, director of graduate career services, represented the Iowa State MBA program as Past President at the summer meeting of the Southwest MBA Alliance (SWMBA) in June.  SWMBA is a consortium consisting predominantly of Big-12 MBA career services offices.  The group is planning an MBA Virtual Career Fair to be held this fall, as well as an MBA alumni networking event in Kansas City, MO.  Also being explored is a joint employment recruiting event with the SEC-MBA consortium.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS

Hendra Tandradinata, lecturer of management information systems, received a "Faculty Internship and Development Grant" from Principal Financial Group (PFG) in Des Moines, IA.  In addition to benefiting Principal Financial Group, the project will also enable Mr. Tandradinata to enhance skills and expertise that he uses in teaching MIS 331 (File and Structure Programming in C#) and MIS 431X (Contemporary Language Software Development in VB.NET) at Iowa State University.  He will have the opportunity to work and learn from Principal's RIS (retirement and Investment Service) Business Unit in the PC App Development from May 23 until Aug 12.

Prem Premkumar, professor of management information systems, had a paper titled "Sustaining Competitive Advantage through a Value Net" that was published in MISQ-Executive selected as one of the top ten papers that best exemplified MISQE.

Hitachi, Fujitsu, Toshiba, and IBM agreed to sponsor a multi-phase, multinational research study on knowledge management in embedded software outsourcing in the consumer electronics industry to be conducted by Amrit Tiwana, assistant professor, management information systems, in collaboration with professors Hiroshi Tsuji (Osaka), Akito Sakurai (Keio), and Ken'ichi Yoshida (Tsukuba), and Ashley Bush (Florida State). Hitachi, Fujitsu, Toshiba, and IBM will assign internal liaisons for facilitating access to their outsourcing partners.   

Anandhi Bharadwaj (Emory University) and Amrit Tiwana's, assistant professor, management information systems, paper “Managerial Sensemaking of E-business Investment Opportunities: A Field Study,” was recently accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.

Lars Peterson, associate state director of the Iowa SBDC, attended the Third Annual Economic Gardening Conference on June 2-4, 2005 in Murphys, CA.

SPRING 2005
Visions magazine included the following College of Business alums in the letters section:

Ike Harris, 1974, Industrial Administration/Accounting, was named one of the "75 Most Powerful African-Americans in Corporate America" by Black Enterprise magazine.  Ike is president of BellSouth Enterprises and is co-chair of BellSouth's Diversity Council.

Ned Skinner, 1974, Industrial Administration/Accounting, purchased US Coffee, a distributor of coffee and other beverages to offices, hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops throughout central Iowa.

Mark Sullivan, 1975, Industrial Administration, joined RSM McGladrey as the executive compensation consulting practice leader in its Minneapolis office.

Michael Fischer, 1979, Industrial Administration, is president of North America Formica Corporation.

Michael Schulte, 1979, Industrial Administration, has been promoted to vice president for private banking with Wells Fargo Bank in Pasadena, CA.

SPRING 2005
Visions magazine listed the 2005 distinguished alumni and friend for the university.  Mary and John Pappajohn were honored on April 8 and 9 during the distinguished awards celebration.

Tom (1999, TransLog) and Teresa Wacha was interviewed for Visions magazine on what drew them to stay in Iowa after graduating from Iowa State University.

Visions magazine interviewed Angela Mathews Moore (1998, Marketing) on how she came back to Iowa after being employed out of state for five years.

An article on "Grow Your Small Market Farm" business network, sponsored in part by ISU's Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC) was published in Visions magazine.  The network recently sponsored a business-planning program designed for farm businesses interested in raising specialty livestock, poultry, vegetables, herbs, flowers, and prairie and native grass seed.

Inside Iowa State announced Michael Crum's, professor of logistics and supply chain management, appointment to associate dean for graduate programs.

Kay Palan
, associate professor of marketing and associate dean of undergraduate programs, was quoted in the Des Moines Register regarding the downtown Younkers closing.

In an article entitled "CAFTA Foes' Short-Sightedness Hurts US.", Lincoln Star Journal quoted a study completed by Dermot Hayes, pioneer chair of agribusiness and professor of finance, that estimated that CAFTA would lift hog prices by 36 cents a head.
