"Lunch with Labh": Beginning
this summer, I plan to
initiate "Lunch with Labh"
meetings. It will be an
informal venue for all
College of Business faculty
and staff. These brown bag
lunches will be held twice a
semester plus one over the
summer. Bring your lunch;
I'll provide a beverage.
Associate Dean
Search Update: Thank
you to all who participated
in last week's interviews
with Rick Carter and Mike
Crum, candidates for the
Associate Dean position. We
hope to have an announcement
in
three to four weeks.
At the 2005 Student Scholars
and Leaders Recognition
Ceremony held Sunday, April
3 in Stephens Auditorium,
the students that were
recognized were asked to
name a faculty or staff
member who had been of
significant help to
them. The following members
of the College of Business
were named: Marv Bouillon,
associate professor of
accounting; Mike Doran,
associate professor of
accounting;
Jan Duffy, adjunct
instructor of accounting;
Kevin J. Hardy,
experiential learning
coordinator; James
Kurtenbach, associate
professor of accounting; and
Richard Smith,
lecturer of management.
Bill Dilla,
associate professor of
accounting, was recognized with
the IRS Star Partner award, in
recognition of the work that he
and Iowa State's accounting
students put into making their
VITA site a success. The award
recognized the site's efforts to
implement the IRS Free File
method of e-filing, the number
of tax returns prepared, and the
site's compliance with IRS
quality standards.
Career Services completed a
very successful recruiting
year. A total
222 companies visited
campus this year to
interview business students.
There were 431 interview
schedules for a total of
2,445 interviews! This
number includes companies
interviewing the day after
the fall and spring career
fair, as well as in Gerdin
throughout the year.
The 2003-2004 Career
Services Annual Report is
now available at: This report details hiring statistics for both internships and full time employment, companies recruiting on-campus, career fair information and the top ten companies hiring business students. Roger Stover, professor
of finance, will be presenting a
three-day "Cases in Banking"
workshop for students in the
Masters Program in Banking and
Financial Management at the
Liechtenstein University of
Applied Sciences June 2-4. The
workshop will focus on the
integrating of commercial banks
and investment banks in client
firm valuation.
The inaugural MBA team case
competition was held on
Thursday, April 14. Nine
first-year MBA teams
participated in the
competition. The case was
on Maytag Corporation,
prepared by Dr. J. David
Hunger, Professor of
Management. The student
teams had less than 24 hours
to analyze the case and to
prepare their findings and recommendations.
Each team presented to a
panel of judges comprised of
business alumni and
faculty. The three top
performing teams and
individual winners included:

2nd Place Team: Tim Folger,
Matt Otten, Adam Hertzke,
Chang Liu

of nearly $220,000 funded
through the Midwest Forensics
Resource Center (MFRC). The
grant was entitled, "Feasibility
and Proof of Concept of
Utilizing Radio Frequency
Identification Tagging
Technology to Manage Evidentiary
Materials in Forensics
Laboratories." Amrit Tiwana, assistant professor of management information systems, presented his research study on knowledge management in global outsourcing partnerships in an invited MIS research seminar at University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management. Amrit Tiwana also had his paper with Ashley Bush (Florida State University) "Designing Sticky Knowledge Networks" appears in the May 2005 issue of Communications of the ACM. Professor Hiroshi Tsuji (Osaka Prefecture University, Japan) visited Iowa State University as part of an ISU-Japan research collaboration. He also discussed emerging Japan-specific MIS trends, practices, and opportunities in two interactive classroom sessions with CoB students. SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTERS
Jon Ryan,
state director of
the Iowa SBDC, will
be participating in
a panel presentation
at the 2005
Professional
Developers of Iowa
Spring Conference in
late May in Council
Bluffs. The panel
will review the
small business
situation in Iowa,
with an overview of
new and existing
programs that can
continue to enhance
entrepreneurship in
the state of Iowa.
Jon Ryan gave a presentation entitled “Doing Business in Iowa” to the Bettendorf Rotary Club on April 6. Jon Ryan was a presenter at the Leadership Iowa Conference in Mason City on April 8th. His presentation was on entrepreneurship in Iowa and the services of the SBDC. Jon Ryan gave a one hour presentation on how to start a Veterinary practice to the Veterinary Practice Builders group at the ISU College of Veterinary Medicine on April 11th.
