DEAN

Congratulations to Dermot Hayes, Pioneer Chair of Agribusiness and professor of finance; Gary Koppenhaver, associate professor of finance; and Mark Power, university professor of finance, who were recognized at the University Convocation and Awards Ceremony on September 26.  Dermot received a James Huntington Ellis Award for Excellent in Undergraduate Introductory Teaching, Gary a Louis Thompson Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award, and Mark was named University Professor.  Congratulations to each of you on these deserving awards of recognition.

CAREER SERVICES
Students Prepare for Career Fair during Mock Interviews

Ten companies interviewed 79 students during Mock Interviews on September 15. Students were able to have their interviewing skills critiqued by recruiters from companies such as Allied Insurance, John Deere, Pella Corporation, and more.

 

Business/LAS Fall Career Fair and Interview Day

The Fall 2005 Business/LAS Career Fair took place on Wednesday, September 21, in Hilton Coliseum.  Three-thousand one-hundred twenty-two students took advantage of the opportunity to meet with 167 employers. During Interview Day on Thursday, September 22, 501 students interviewed with 38 companies – a 46% increase in companies over the 2004 Interview Day! Thank you to all of the employers, students, and faculty that continue to make the Business/LAS Career Fair a success.

Public vs. Private Accounting
In conjunction with Beta Alpha Psi, there will be a Public vs. Private accounting program on Tuesday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m. in the Richard and Joan Stark Lecture Hall, 1148 Gerdin Business Building.  Representatives Dawn Christensen from John Deere, Anne Brummett from Union Pacific, Kristin Funk from KPMG, and Mike Fliehe from Ernst & Young LLP will be speaking.

Carrie Mark from JP Morgan to Speak
Carrie Mark from JP Morgan will speak to Beta Alpha Psi and the Finance club on Thursday, October 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the Richard and Joan Stark Lecture Hall, 1148 Gerdin Business Building.  Carrie graduated from ISU with an accounting degree in 1990 and worked for McGladrey & Pullen LLP as a CPA for a couple years before moving to her current job with JP Morgan in
New York City.  All students are welcome to attend, please contact Business Career Services at 294-2542 if you have any questions.

DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT
The Future of Business and Technology panel discussion was held Friday, September 2, in the Memorial Union.  The panel included:  David Kingland, president and CEO of Kingland Systems Corporation; Jeff Townsend, chief of staff at Cerner Corporation; Carl Chang, chair of ISU's computer science department; and Douglas Troxel, founder and chairman of Serena.  The panelists discussed the future of business and technology, specifically focusing on globalization, technology, and public policy.

MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Gary Hackbarth, assistant professor of management information systems, was nominated and accepted a position on the University Institutional Review Board (IRB).     

Gary Hackbarth’s, assistant professor of management information systems, article “Project Management Now a Key Skill” appeared in the September 5 issue of the Des Moines Business Record.

Amrit Tiwana, assistant professor of management information systems, and Mark Keil, Georgia State University, had a paper entitled “Functionality Risk in Software Development: An Empirical Investigation” accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.

Amrit Tiwana, assistant professor of management information systems, Stephen Du, Lars Mathiassen, Mark Keil, and Yide Shen had a conference paper entitled ”The Role Of Perceived Control, Attention-Shaping, And Expertise In IT Project Risk Assessment,” accepted at Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) in 2006.

Amrit Tiwana, assistant professor of management information systems, was appointed Advisor to the Board of The Knowledge Management Professional Society, a knowledge management non-profit professional society with 4,000 members in 79 countries. 

MARKETING
Kay Palan, associate dean of undergraduate programs and associate professor of marketing, and R. Kenneth Teas, distinguished professor of marketing, had an articile entitled (forthcoming), “An Examination of Measurement Context and Representational Effects of Consumer Expectations,” accepted by Journal of Consumer Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction and Complaining Behavior

DeAnna Kempf, and Kay Palan, associate dean of undergraduate programs and

associate professor of marketing (forthcoming), had an article titled “The Effects of

Gender anD Argument Strength on the Processing of Word-of-Mouth

Communication," accepted by Academy of Marketing Studies Journal.

 

OPERATIONS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

Danny Johnson, associate professor of operation and supply chain management,

gave a presentation to the Institute of Supply Management chapter in Moline, Illinois

titled "Strategies for Minimizing Supply Chain Disruptions:  Recent Research into

Best Practices" on September 14.  Jennifer Blackhurst, assistant professor of

logistics supply chain management, helped develop the presentation.

Speakers:  Jeff and Kelli Schulz, owners of K. Renee in West Des Moines

K. Renee started in 1988 in the home of Jeff and Kelli Schulz in rural Gladbrook. Kelli’s philosophy was clear, unique and beautiful items at your fingertips. It was shopping made easy, either at the studio in her home or at the home of the customer.

In September of 1999, K. Renee ventured into a bigger market, and opened in the Governor’s Square Mall in West Des Moines. They have been pleased with the attention and activity they have received in Des Moines. Here, they are still committed to personal service and individual style and will continue to bring the beautiful things to their customers.

The forums are sponsored bimonthly by the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. A roundtable discussion follows the speaker presentations. The forums feature area entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and business consultants.

SMALL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Mid Iowa SBDC Director Sherry Shafer gave a presentation with Penny Brown Huber on “Grow Your Small Market Farm: Train-the-Trainer” at the national Association of Small Business Development Center’s Silver Anniversary Fall Conference in Baltimore, Maryland on September 8. 

State Director Jon Ryan was the inaugural chair of the Agriculture and Rural Development Task Force for the national Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC).  He chaired the Task Force’s special interest meeting at the recent national conference in Baltimore, Maryland on September 9 and has just been asked by the President/CEO of the ASBDC to continue to chair this special interest section.

SBDC State Director Jon Ryan gave a presentation on “Dealing With Distressed Companies” at the national Association of Small Business Development Center’s Silver Anniversary Fall Conference in Baltimore, Maryland on September 8. 

Lars Peterson, associate state director, and Jon Ryan, state director, exhibited at the Iowa Venture Capital Conference on September 15 in Des Moines.  Jon Ryan also exhibited at the Iowa Bankers Association’s 119th Annual Convention on September 20 in Des Moines. 

On September 19, during Business Week special activities, state director Jon Ryan spoke to many Iowa State business students about what the Small Business Development Centers do and where they are located; the importance of small business to Iowa and the need to support this growing and vital segment of the state's economy; relationships that are essential for the success of an entrepreneur; and the value to Iowa of the business assistance provided by the SBDCs. 

State director Jon Ryan gave a presentation on SBDC services to the Service Corps of Retired Executives, Iowa City Chapter, in Coralville on September 21. 

As part of a continuing effort to strengthen Iowa's economy, state director, Jon Ryan and associate state director, Lars Peterson participated in an Entrepreneurial Study by the Iowa Department of Economic Development, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute’s Technology Partnership Practice on September 27 in Ames.  Battelle, which is recognized worldwide for technology-based economic development, management, commercialization, and developing industry, government and academic partnerships, interviewed Ryan and Peterson about Iowa’s service providers and clients, to learn their viewpoints regarding this initiative, specifically on Iowa’s climate for entrepreneur development, policies, and programs the state should pursue and support.

On September 28, state director, Jon Ryan participated on a panel called “Our Partners Respond: Implications for Practice” at the Sociology Research Symposium held at the Scheman Center here at Iowa State University.  Other panel members included Sandy Ehrig, Division Administrator, Iowa Department of Economic Development; Rick Morain, Publisher, Bee & Herald and Member, Board of Directors, Community Vitality Center; Denny Harding, Iowa Farm Bureau, and Treasurer, Iowa Rural Development Council.

On September 28, 29, and 30, Jon Ryan, state director; Lars Peterson, associate state director; and Ellen Nystrom, business manager, attended the Professional Developers of Iowa’s Annual Meeting and Fall Conference at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29
Mark Power, professor of finance, was announced as University Professor in the Iowa State Daily.

The Iowa State Daily had a story on a panel who discussed U.S.-Korea relations.  Panel members included:  Labh Hira, dean, College of Business; Ahn Chong-ghee, economic counselor for the embassy of the Republic of Korea; Kwan Choi, professor of economics; John Wong, associate professor of business.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 28
Ann Long-Richards (1999, MBA) was featured in "Do You Know" in The Des Moines Register.  Ann is vice president of finance/chief financial officer at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, IA.

The Iowa State Daily ran a story entitled, "ISU Student Earns His Tuition With Gaming", which is about a junior in business management, Josh Sievers.  Josh will participate in the World Cyber Games.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
The Iowa State Daily ran an article on Robin Habeger, director of partnership development, and a member of the search and rescue team, Star 1, based out of the Story County Emergency Management Agency.  Robin is on call to deploy to the Gulf Coast to aid in search and rescue efforts.

The Tribune ran an article on Josh Sievers, junior in business management, who  will take part in the World Cyber Games in November.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25
Daniel L. Krieger, DAC member for the College of Business, was featured in "On The Move" in The Tribune for being elected as chairman-elect of the Iowa Bankers Association for 2005-06.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
In a follow-up to the ISU vs. Army game, The Des Moines Register quoted Jill Wagner (1976, Industrial Administration), "It's awe-spiring, a New York resident and 1976 Iowa State graduate.  Every time I see it, I get a lump in my throat, although I can cry watching a Hallmark Card commercial.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
Inside Iowa State announced that Madolyn Johnson, founder and owner of The Homemaker's Idea Co., will speak as part of a lecture series offered by the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship.

Inside Iowa State announced the following honors presented to faculty:
Dermot Hayes, Pioneer Chair in Agribusiness and professor of finance received the "James Huntington Ellis Award For Excellence in Undergraduate Introductory Teaching."

Gary Koppenhaver, associate professor of finance received the "Louis Thompson Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award."

Mark Power, professor of finance, earned the title "University Professor".

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18
An announcement for the fall 2005 career fair was printed in The Tribune.

The Des Moines Register printed an article on sites to see when attending the ISU vs. Army football game in New York City.  Jill Wagner (1976, Industrial Administration) said for the fans, "tell them it's all right to look up and stare when they're walking around, I do it all the time."

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15
Business Week (September 14-21) activities were announced in the Iowa State DailyDan Ryan, director of marketing and alumni relations, stated that Business Week gives students a chance to interact with faculty, staff, and alumni on an informal basis.

The Des Moines Register ran a story on Josh Sievers, a junior in business management and member of Team 3D.  Team 3D take part in computer game competitions around the world and are preparing for the world finals in November.  The participants draw stipends which helps cover tuition costs for Sievers.

Steve Carter, director for the ISU Research Park and Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, was interviewed by the Iowa State Daily regarding funding for the Grow Iowa Values Fund.

The Iowa State Daily ran a story on the increase of student participation in study abroad.  Jenna Hermanson, senior in marketing, was interviewed regarding her study abroad experience in Spain.

The Des Moines Business Record announced that John Pappajohn will hold a business plan competition that will award $25,000 for 1st place, $15,000 for 2nd place, and $10,000 for 3rd place.

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13
Mark Peterson, director of graduate career services, was interviewed by the ISU Daily, regarding international students obtaining work visas.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 12
The Los Angeles Times ran a story entitled "Giving Can be a Tricky Business" in which Kay Palan, associate dean of undergraduate programs and associate professor of marketing, was quoted.

Roger Stover, professor of finance, wrote a story entitled "Business Owners Need an Exit Strategy" that was printed in the Des Moines Business Record.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11
The Tribune interviewed Mike Upah, assistant director, Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, about the Small Business Development Center and it's location in the Iowa State University Research Park.

Paula Morrow, university professor of management, was quoted in "Convince Your Boss of Trainings' Benefits" in The Albany Times Union.

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 9
Inside Iowa State featured art that is displayed throughout campus, including an unnamed sculpture that is located at the south entry of the Gerdin Business Building.  The Escalieta I, located in the Gerdin Business Building lobby, was also featured.

A story on a severe storm that went through campus on September 8 was ran in the Iowa State Daily.  Seven injuries were reported, with one occurring near the Gerdin Business Building.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8
The Tribune ran a story on Robin Habeger, director of partnership development, and her involvement with search and rescue.  Robin and her dog Talyn are on call to assist in areas impacted by hurricane Katrina.

An announcement that the College of Business will host an MBA lunch and learn on September 12 was printed in Inside Iowa State.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 5
Paula Morrow, university professor of management, was quoted in Workbytes, "Training Improves You and Your Company" in The Des Moines Register.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 4
Maggie Hamilton-Beyer, 2002 MBA alum, was featured in "On The Move" in The Tribune.  She was named chief financial officer of the Story County Medical Center in Nevada.

Kay Palan, associate dean of undergraduate programs and associate professor of marketing, was quoted in "Gasoline Prices Force Iowans to Rethink Driving Habits" that was ran in the Associate Press.

The Des Moines Register quoted Kay Palan in "Iowans Retune Driving Habits".

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3
A story entitled "ISU Alums Stress People, Business Skills" ran in the mid-Iowa section of The Tribune.  This was regarding a panel discussion on the future of business and technology, focusing on globalization, technology, and public policy.  ISU alums who served as panelists were as follows:  Doug Troxel, founder, chairman and chief technology officer, SERENA Software; David Kingland, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Kingland Systems; Jeff Townsend, chief of staff at Cerner Corporation; and Carl Chang, chair of ISU's computer science department.

FALL 2005
Visions announced the 2005 Honor and Award recipients for each of the Colleges.  The College of Business recipients are as follows:  Raymond Beebe (1964, Industrial Administration), Citation of Achievement; Kimberly (Stahlhut) Dennis (1989, Accounting), Citation of Achievement; Ann Madden Rice (1979, Accounting), Citation of Achievement; John H. Stafford (1976, Accounting and Logistics), John DeVries Service Award.</
