BUSINESS COUNCIL Upcoming Dates:
Ten companies interviewed 79 students during Mock Interviews on September 15. Students were able to have their interviewing skills critiqued by recruiters from companies such as Allied Insurance, John Deere, Pella Corporation, and more.
Business/LAS Fall Career Fair and Interview Day The Fall 2005 Business/LAS Career Fair took place on Wednesday, September 21, in Hilton Coliseum. Three-thousand one-hundred twenty-two students took advantage of the opportunity to meet with 167 employers. During Interview Day on Thursday, September 22, 501 students interviewed with 38 companies – a 46% increase in companies over the 2004 Interview Day! Thank you to all of the employers, students, and faculty that continue to make the Business/LAS Career Fair a success.

OPERATIONS AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT Danny Johnson, associate professor of operation and supply chain management, gave a presentation to the Institute of Supply Management chapter in Moline, Illinois titled "Strategies for Minimizing Supply Chain Disruptions: Recent Research into Best Practices" on September 14. Jennifer Blackhurst, assistant professor of logistics supply chain management, helped develop the presentation.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP K. Renee started in 1988 in the home of Jeff and Kelli Schulz in rural Gladbrook. Kelli’s philosophy was clear, unique and beautiful items at your fingertips. It was shopping made easy, either at the studio in her home or at the home of the customer. In September of 1999, K. Renee ventured into a bigger market, and opened in the Governor’s Square Mall in West Des Moines. They have been pleased with the attention and activity they have received in Des Moines. Here, they are still committed to personal service and individual style and will continue to bring the beautiful things to their customers. The forums are sponsored bimonthly by the ISU Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship. A roundtable discussion follows the speaker presentations. The forums feature area entrepreneurs, venture capitalists and business consultants. SMALL
BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT CENTER State Director Jon Ryan was the inaugural chair of the Agriculture and Rural Development Task Force for the national Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC). He chaired the Task Force’s special interest meeting at the recent national conference in Baltimore, Maryland on September 9 and has just been asked by the President/CEO of the ASBDC to continue to chair this special interest section. SBDC State Director Jon Ryan gave a presentation on “Dealing With Distressed Companies” at the national Association of Small Business Development Center’s Silver Anniversary Fall Conference in Baltimore, Maryland on September 8. Lars Peterson, associate state director, and Jon Ryan, state director, exhibited at the Iowa Venture Capital Conference on September 15 in Des Moines. Jon Ryan also exhibited at the Iowa Bankers Association’s 119th Annual Convention on September 20 in Des Moines. On September 19, during Business Week special activities, state director Jon Ryan spoke to many Iowa State business students about what the Small Business Development Centers do and where they are located; the importance of small business to Iowa and the need to support this growing and vital segment of the state's economy; relationships that are essential for the success of an entrepreneur; and the value to Iowa of the business assistance provided by the SBDCs. State director Jon Ryan gave a presentation on SBDC services to the Service Corps of Retired Executives, Iowa City Chapter, in Coralville on September 21. As part of a continuing effort to strengthen Iowa's economy, state director, Jon Ryan and associate state director, Lars Peterson participated in an Entrepreneurial Study by the Iowa Department of Economic Development, performed by the Battelle Memorial Institute’s Technology Partnership Practice on September 27 in Ames. Battelle, which is recognized worldwide for technology-based economic development, management, commercialization, and developing industry, government and academic partnerships, interviewed Ryan and Peterson about Iowa’s service providers and clients, to learn their viewpoints regarding this initiative, specifically on Iowa’s climate for entrepreneur development, policies, and programs the state should pursue and support. On September 28, state director, Jon Ryan participated on a panel called “Our Partners Respond: Implications for Practice” at the Sociology Research Symposium held at the Scheman Center here at Iowa State University. Other panel members included Sandy Ehrig, Division Administrator, Iowa Department of Economic Development; Rick Morain, Publisher, Bee & Herald and Member, Board of Directors, Community Vitality Center; Denny Harding, Iowa Farm Bureau, and Treasurer, Iowa Rural Development Council.

MEDIA HITS Media Hits for College of Business for September 2005 THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29 Mark Power, professor of finance, was announced as University Professor in the Iowa State Daily. The Iowa State Daily had a story on a panel who discussed U.S.-Korea relations. Panel members included: Labh Hira, dean, College of Business; Ahn Chong-ghee, economic counselor for the embassy of the Republic of Korea; Kwan Choi, professor of economics; John Wong, associate professor of business.

18 The Des Moines Register printed an article on sites to see when attending the ISU vs. Army football game in New York City. Jill Wagner (1976, Industrial Administration) said for the fans, "tell them it's all right to look up and stare when they're walking around, I do it all the time."

SEPTEMBER 15 The Des Moines Register ran a story on Josh Sievers, a junior in business management and member of Team 3D. Team 3D take part in computer game competitions around the world and are preparing for the world finals in November. The participants draw stipends which helps cover tuition costs for Sievers. Steve Carter, director for the ISU Research Park and Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship, was interviewed by the Iowa State Daily regarding funding for the Grow Iowa Values Fund. The Iowa State Daily ran a story on the increase of student participation in study abroad. Jenna Hermanson, senior in marketing, was interviewed regarding her study abroad experience in Spain. The Des Moines Business Record announced that John Pappajohn will hold a business plan competition that will award $25,000 for 1st place, $15,000 for 2nd place, and $10,000 for 3rd place.
