Supporting Learning and Teaching
The College of Business supports an
environment consistent with its learning and teaching mission.
Learning Environment
In December 2003, the College of Business
moved into a new building, the Gerdin Business Building. This facility offers
state-of-the-art learning facilities to students. Every classroom is equipped
with computer portals and high-tech presentation equipment. Several tiered
classrooms complement the use of case pedagogy and capstone classes. Most
classrooms have movable desks and chairs to facilitate several types of learning
configurations. The College boasts three computer classrooms and a
state-of-the-art trading lab. A behavioral learning lab is available to students
and to learn behavioral research skills.
In addition to classroom facilities, the
Gerdin Business Building has spaces throughout the building for students to
study, relax, or visit.

Learning
Communities
The
College of Business has two types of learning community opportunities for
business students.
Business Learning Teams (BLT’s)
The College of Business has offered
Business Learning Teams to incoming freshmen and transfer students since the
inception of the learning community concept at Iowa State University in 1995.
Currently, the College has 10 learning teams; approximately 30% of new students
join learning teams.

Entrepreneurship & Innovation Learning
Community (EILC)
The Entrepreneurship & Innovation Learning
Community was started at Iowa State University in Fall 2004 to create an
environment where entrepreneurial students can be nourished. Open to all majors
on campus and for all grade levels, the community is unique. A residential
learning community, the EILC is housed in Buchanan Hall and currently has 50
members.
