As part of the MIS
program’s continuing commitment to our students’
development, the MIS faculty has worked with the
College’s IT support staff to develop a truly
state-of-the-art telecommunications training
lab.
At the heart of our
telecommunications training is a commitment to
powerful simulation environments that allow
students to work with significantly more
sophisticated systems than are found in more
traditional lab environments. To develop
network server skills, we utilize a virtual
machine environment that allows each student to
develop their own full server installation that
they can continue to develop as the semester and
their skill set progresses. In addition to the
continuing access to their own server, the
students also have access to a heterogenous set
of client machines, which provides them ample
opportunity to learn the nuances of managing a
heterogenous organizational environment.
Based upon a
generous donation from
Opnet
Technologies, we also provide each student
with access to ITGuru, a state-of-the-art
network simulation package that enables our
students to develop and troubleshoot complex
networks, as well as learn how to operate an
industry-standard software package.

Activities
The following are examples of the kinds of lab
activities our students perform in our
telecommunications lab facility.
Network Design using ITGuru
The following labs were developed from projects
developed as training tools at Opnet
Technologies, and provide the students with an
excellent understanding of issues in network
design and troubleshooting, as well as in the
use of an industry standard software.
