PLEASE NOTE: Beginning for the Spring 2007 semester, the volunteers within the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program must be enrolled in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program course.  Please refer to the information below and if you are interested in the course, please contact Maya at darylh@iastate.edu.

What is VITA?

• Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS)
• Free tax assistance offered by volunteers to both students at ISU and the general public

About the class

• 1 credit half semester course taught by Dr. Dilla and other accounting professors
• Registration through Access Plus during the Fall semester
• Prerequisite is Acct 284 - Basic Financial Accounting
• Anybody can register - you do not have to be in Beta Alpha Psi!
• The course would give us the skills necessary to assist most taxpayers with their tax returns and should cover probable situations we may encounter while dealing with the public

About the volunteering

• Each participant would be required to volunteer for the VITA workshop for a predetermined number of hours
• Location- one of the computer classrooms (This way we can help more people. Last year we didn’t have enough computers)
• We would use Taxwise software to process the returns
• We assist with both state and federal forms
