MIS Faculty

The MIS faculty at Iowa State University invite you to come and visit our classes. We also invite you to contact us with any questions about the major, classes, and careers.

Zhengrui Jiang, PhD.

I am currently an assistant profess of Management Information Systems at Iowa State University. Before joining ISU, I taught at the College of Business, the University of North Alabama for three years.

Like other professors, I spent many years in college and graduate schools. I have earned degrees in International Business, MBA, Computer Science, and Information Systems. Outside of academia, I had some business/management experience in China and some software development experience with Nortel Networks in Richardson, Texas.

Other than teaching, I also spend time on research. My primary research interests include data quality issues in decision making, software economics, and software engineering. In my research, I always try to take into considering the business factors when making technological decisions.

I consider the field of Management Information Systems a bridge that connects information technology and business/management. Based on my academic training and industry experience on both sides of the bridge, I believe that MIS is a great field to major in, and MIS graduates will in be in high demand for years to come.

My contact information is available on my ISU homepage. If you have any questions regarding the field of MIS, please feel free to contact me.

Brian Mennecke, PhD.

I seem to be a professional student!  I have a B.A. in Geology from Knox College, two Masters degrees from Miami University, one in Business Administration and a second in Geology, and a Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from Indiana University.  I have worked as an analyst, a project manager, and a consultant.   In addition to doing stuff with my family, I like to fish and kayak- sometime at the same time.

I moved to Iowa State from East Carolina University in 1999 and love Iowa.  I teach the graduate course in the MBA core, the graduate course in Database Management, graduate and undergraduate courses in electronic commerce, and the undergraduate course in systems analysis and design.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.  My campus address is 3313 Gerdin Business Building.  My university web page is here, and and my office phone is 515-294-8100.

Sree Nilakanta, PhD.

I started my teaching career at ISU on a cold, wintry day in January 1986. Before I came to Iowa State I earned an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, and I worked as an engineer in India. In 1977 I came to Houston to pursue an MBA. I thought I wanted to work in finance or accounting, but I soon realized that my interests leaned towards technology. Management Information Systems was just beginning to grow popular, and I decided to get my doctorate in that field. In December 1985 I received my Ph.D. in MIS.

Along with a few others, I had the great opportunity to build up the MIS program at ISU. I have taught almost all of the MIS courses at one time or another, with the exception of telecommunications and e-commerce. Now, I teach Business Process Management and MIS Research at the graduate level, and occasionally I get a chance to teach undergraduates. My passion is teaching innovative and challenging courses.

I also work closely with students and faculty from computer science on research projects that have relevance to the business community. In addition to academic work, I also dabble in entrepreneurial ventures (I have started a few companies). I enjoy coming up with new ideas and developing software innovations. I also volunteer my time and expertise to various non-profit agencies in Iowa.

Kevin Scheibe, PhD.

My first career was as a software engineer at a start-up company in CA.  The dream was to be the next Apple Computer.  I still have the stock options - somewhere.  My undergraduate degree was in Computer Science and I loved developing software, but I realized that I also loved working with people.  I have worked as a manager of information systems, an IT consultant, and director of operations for commercial properties.

After receiving my Ph.D. in Business Information Technology at Virginia Tech, I came to Iowa State University as an Assistant Professor of MIS.  In Spring 2008 I will teach Supply Chain Information Systems and Computer-based Decision Support Systems. You can see a brief description of both classes here.  You can also see what some of my former students have thought of my teaching here at RateMyProfessor.com - yes, we do occasionally look at these ourselves.

Please stop by or email if you have any questions.  I'm on the third floor of Gerdin.  My university web page is here, and my vita is here.
