MES, Iowa – A new Web-based specialization for Iowa State University MBA students will be offered Fall 2003 in Family Financial Planning.

The College of Business and the College of Family and Consumer Sciences are joining forces to provide students the opportunity to use 12 credit hours of coursework in Family Financial Planning as an MBA specialization.  By adding another 6 credits to their total program, MBA candidates will be able to complete the 18-credit Graduate Certificate in Family Financial Planning along with their MBA.

ISU’s Graduate Certificate in Family Financial Planning has been approved by the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, a professional regulatory organization that fosters professional standards in personal financial planning, as meeting the examination requirements to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP).

The CFP curriculum is comprised of Web-based courses offered by Iowa State and six other universities through the Great Plains Interactive Distance Education Alliance (GP-IDEA).  Family Financial Planning courses enable students to enhance their personal financial knowledge and complete the requirements for CFP certification.  This Web-based curriculum allows students to work at a self-paced, convenient format.

“Our work with the GP-IDEA consortium permits us to offer post-baccalaureate programs that we do not have sufficient resources to offer on our own.  The new connection of the Family Financial Planning program to the MBA program in the College of Business extends limited resources even farther” said Mary Winter, associate dean in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

“We believe the Family Financial Planning specialization will be valuable to the Des Moines financial services market,” said Anthony Hendrickson, associate dean of the College of Business. “This program will combine certified family financial planning training with the broad business skills of an Iowa State MBA degree, creating professionals that have the comprehensive knowledge to manage client portfolios in an increasingly complex financial environment.”

The College of Business is the third largest college at Iowa State with a Fall 2002 enrollment of more than 4,000 students.
