Funding and Placement

Financial aid is provided to all students admitted into the PhD program. The financial aid package will include coverage of tuition fees and a half-time assistantship stipend. The assistantship appointment will require students to work as a research or a teaching assistant.

Graduate assistantships also include health insurance coverage and a prescription drug benefit program free of charge for the graduate student. Coverage for spouses and children may be purchased. Dental insurance for graduate students and their families may be purchased for an additional fee. Details about health and dental insurance may be found at: http://www.grad-college.iastate.edu/finance/healthinsurance.html

The College’s policy is to provide financial support for four years to eligible doctoral students. To continue the assistantship beyond the second year, students have to show satisfactory progress with both course work and advancement to PhD candidacy. That is, funding will be contingent on successful completion of established milestones and the recommendation of the student’s supervisory committee or the PhD Director.

The College will also provide each doctoral student with development funds for implementing research projects and travel associated with research presentations at major academic conferences.

Spotlight

Ph.D. Spotlight

This new program development occurs at a critical time in business education. According to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which accredits business programs, a shortage of 1,800 qualified business faculty will exist in 2008—and the shortage is projected to reach 2,500 by 2012. By some estimates, more than 1,000 PhD vacancies remain open today. Yet less than one-third of accredited business schools have doctoral programs.
